چکیده

This paper proposes a method for a subpixel accuracy detection of edges, ridges, and other curvilinear visual patterns, based on identification of their “extended color profiles”. These profiles accurately capture the image color in an orthogonal direction to the curve, in a range of a few pixels. It is well known that various types of “curvilinear visual patterns”, and not only edges and ridges, appear in abundance in high resolution images of the real world. We believe that the most coherent way to adequately capture and represent such patterns is to explicitly identify their shape in the direction transversal to the curve, i.e. to capture their extended color profiles (and not only their blur factor). Also for edges and ridges we argue that their blur factor, as appears in the existing methods, is insufficient in order to reconstruct them in a visually accurate way. To this extent we suggest an experiment visualizing “true” color profiles of edges and ridges. Its results present pretty complicated color profiles of certain edges and ridges in natural high-resolution images. The visual effect of these profiles is easily distinguishable on the image. We describe “shape curves” the main element of our “output format” in which we represent detected edges, ridges, and other curvilinear patterns. A shape curve is defined by a central line, which is a spline curve of the third or second order, equipped with extended color profiles along it. We describe an algorithm starting with the initial detection of edges and ridges, then constructing on this base empiric model elements (EME’s) accurately capturing the image color in a vicinity of the edge/ridge. Finally the shape curves with their color profiles are identified through the chains of the EME’s. We also describe construction of aggregated shape curves with aggregated color profiles. They capture bundles of adjacent shape curves.

Morphological Exudate Detection in Retinal Images using PCA-based Optic Disc Removal

Diabetic retinopathy lesion detection such as exudate in fundus image of retina can lead to early diagnosis of the disease. Retinal image includes dark areas such as main blood vessels and retinal tissue and also bright areas such as optic disk, optical fibers and lesions e.g. exudate. In this paper, a multistage algorithm for the detection of exudate in foreground is proposed. The algorithm se...

A Statistical Method for Sequential Images – Based Process Monitoring

Today, with the growth of technology, monitoring processes by the use of video and satellite sensors have been more expanded, due to their rich and valuable information. Recently, some researchers have used sequential images for image defect detection because a single image is not sufficient for process monitoring. In this paper, by adding the time dimension to the image-based process monitorin...

Edge Detection Based On Nearest Neighbor Linear Cellular Automata Rules and Fuzzy Rule Based System

Edge Detection is an important task for sharpening the boundary of images to detect the region of interest. This paper applies a linear cellular automata rules and a Mamdani Fuzzy inference model for edge detection in both monochromatic and the RGB images. In the uniform cellular automata a transition matrix has been developed for edge detection. The Results have been compared to the ...

Edge Detection and Ridge Detection with Automatic Scale SelectionTony

When extracting features from image data, the type of information that can be extracted may be strongly dependent on the scales at which the feature detectors are applied. This article presents a systematic methodology for addressing this problem. A mechanism is presented for automatic selection of scale levels when detecting one-dimensional features, such as edges and ridges. A novel concept o...
